On the Block with the Scotts | Episode 6

Sometimes the path to finding your purpose isn't a straight line. Sometimes it starts with burnout, an unexpected opportunity, and the courage to walk away from something that no longer feels right.

In Episode 6 of On the Block with the Scotts, Jen Scott sits down with Devon Warren, founder of Devon Warren Photography, to talk about his journey from education to entrepreneurship, his creative work, and what makes the Essex County community so special.

Based in West Orange, New Jersey, Devon has built a photography career spanning live music, corporate events, portraits, headshots, and real estate photography. He's also a Bloomfield resident with a genuine appreciation for the communities he calls home.

His story offers a reminder that building a successful business isn't just about talent. It's about growth, adaptability, preparation, and learning to believe in yourself.

When Burnout Becomes a Turning Point

Before becoming a professional photographer, Devon worked as a high school guidance counselor and later in an educational setting serving students with significant behavioral challenges.

Eventually, the work took its toll.

He recalls a particular day when he arrived at work, sat in the parking lot, and realized he didn't want to go inside.

That moment helped him recognize something important: even though he didn't yet know what he wanted to do next, he knew his current path wasn't right for him.

With encouragement from his then-girlfriend, now his wife, Devon left his job in October 2006.

He began a recording studio in his home before eventually opening a commercial recording space.

Photography entered the picture almost by accident.

As a studio owner, Devon found himself needing photography and video services. Rather than always relying on someone else, he began learning those skills himself.

Over time, photography evolved from a supporting service into his primary creative passion.

Eventually, he sold the recording studio and pursued photography more seriously.

The Difference Between Having Talent and Running a Business

One of the most valuable parts of Devon's conversation with Jen is his openness about the challenges of entrepreneurship.

Early in his journey, he was figuring things out as he went.

He had the creative ambition and willingness to work, but he eventually recognized that building a sustainable business required more than being good at his craft.

After taking an entrepreneurship course, he began approaching his work with a stronger understanding of business fundamentals.

It's an important lesson for anyone considering starting a business in New Jersey or elsewhere.

Passion may inspire you to start, but business knowledge helps you keep going.

Learning how to operate, adapt, and make thoughtful decisions is just as important as developing the product or service itself.

Photographing People, Not Just Pictures

Devon's portfolio covers an impressive range of environments.

He's photographed high-energy live performances, corporate gatherings, cultural events, and personal portraits. His work has also taken him to Martha's Vineyard, where he's documented the vibrant community and cultural life surrounding Oak Bluffs.

What connects these different settings is his ability to adapt.

Devon explains that growing up around different cultures and experiences helped him feel comfortable moving between very different environments.

That flexibility is especially valuable when working with people.

For studio portraits and professional headshots, Devon doesn't begin by focusing only on camera settings or lighting. He focuses on making his subject comfortable.

Music is one of his favorite tools.

He lets clients choose what they want to hear, then pays attention to the topics and conversations that help them relax.

His background in guidance counseling continues to influence his photography.

By listening, observing body language, and noticing what makes someone smile, he creates an environment where people can show their natural personalities.

For Devon, a technically perfect photograph isn't necessarily a meaningful one.

A great portrait should feel authentic to the person in front of the camera.

Two Photographs That Tell Powerful Stories

When Jen asks Devon about photographs that have stayed with him, he describes two deeply personal images.

One was taken at an anniversary of the March on Washington and features Trayvon Martin's father. Devon remembers capturing an expression that conveyed the weight of a father's grief.

The other photograph features Devon's own father.

After a family photo session involving Devon, his brothers, their father, and their sons, Devon noticed his father sitting quietly. He picked up his camera and captured a spontaneous portrait using the available light.

It became one of his most admired images.

Jen observes that the two photographs reflect dramatically different experiences of fatherhood.

It's a meaningful moment in the interview and a reminder that photography can preserve far more than someone's appearance.

It can preserve emotion, memory, and history.

Why Devon Calls Bloomfield Home

Although Devon's photography studio is in West Orange, he lives in Bloomfield.

He describes Bloomfield as a genuinely diverse community, where people from different backgrounds share a sense of belonging.

He also appreciates the town's longstanding residents and multigenerational connections.

During the interview, Devon and Jen discuss how Bloomfield is changing as more people discover its appeal.

New residential development and rising interest in the town can bring opportunities, but they can also raise questions about preserving neighborhood character.

It's a conversation familiar to many Essex County residents.

Growth can be exciting, especially for homeowners who see increased interest in their communities. At the same time, maintaining the qualities that made a neighborhood attractive in the first place matters.

For Devon, Bloomfield's appeal goes beyond popularity or property values.

It's about the people, the diversity, and the feeling of home.

Why West Orange Works for His Photography Studio

Devon chose West Orange as the home for his photography business for practical reasons as well.

His studio, located at 18 Lindsley Ave in West Orange, NJ, offers convenient parking, access to Route 280, and a location that clients can reach from surrounding communities.

Those details might sound small, but they're important for a business where customers need to feel comfortable and confident visiting in person.

For anyone building a local business, Devon's decision is another example of balancing creative ambition with everyday customer experience.

Devon's Favorite Essex County Places

No episode of On the Block with the Scotts would be complete without exploring the places that make our communities special.

Devon shares several local favorites.

Eagle Rock Reservation

One of Devon's favorite places is Eagle Rock Reservation, known for its sweeping views of the New York City skyline, trails, and opportunities to unwind.

Devon remembers the area from his high school years and appreciates how it has evolved.

Jen also shares her own connection to the reservation, recalling visits with Julius before they purchased their home.

The park's scenery and 9/11 memorial make it a meaningful place for reflection as well as recreation.

Brookdale Park

Devon also loves Brookdale Park, a community gathering place serving Bloomfield and the surrounding area.

Whether you're walking, running, playing sports, enjoying the open space, or spending time with family, the park offers something for different ages and interests.

Devon describes it as a place with a welcoming atmosphere, where people are always out enjoying the community.

Pit Stop

For a favorite locally owned food spot, Devon recommends Pit Stop, a Jamaican jerk restaurant.

He praises its authentic food, consistency, and value.

It's exactly the kind of small business we love hearing about on On the Block: a neighborhood favorite that earns loyal customers through what it does well.

The Power of Positive Self-Talk

Toward the end of the interview, Jen asks Devon what keeps him going when things become difficult.

His answer centers on preparation and the way he talks to himself.

When something goes wrong during a photo shoot, he reminds himself that he has the experience and skills to work through it.

Rather than allowing one mistake to shake his confidence, he relies on the work he's already put in.

He also explains how motivational speeches and positive thinking helped shape his approach to life and entrepreneurship.

It's a lesson that extends well beyond photography.

Whether you're starting a business, changing careers, buying your first home, or navigating an unfamiliar challenge, confidence often grows through preparation and experience.

And sometimes, the voice encouraging you to keep going has to be your own.

More Than Real Estate: The Stories That Make Our Communities

At The Scott Team, we believe understanding a community means more than knowing its homes and property values.

It means getting to know the artists, entrepreneurs, small-business owners, parks, restaurants, and people who give each town its identity.

Devon Warren's story captures exactly why we created On the Block with the Scotts.

His journey is about photography, but it's also about taking chances, building something meaningful, and finding your place within a community.

We're grateful Devon welcomed us into his West Orange studio and shared his experiences with us.
