Jamal Simmons: White House Communications, National Media & Why North Jersey Is Home

You have likely seen his face and heard his voice breaking down critical political moments on national television. As a veteran commentator, CNN contributor, podcast host, and former White House Communications Director to the Vice President, Jamal Simmons has operated at the highest levels of national media and public strategy.

Yet out of all the places his global career and travels could have taken him, he and his family chose to plant roots in Montclair, New Jersey.

When Jamal's wife transferred from Washington, D.C. to New York City for work, they faced the classic dilemma many growing families encounter: where can we find space, great schools, and community without losing the cultural vibrancy of city life?

"The 25-year-old in me wanted to live in New York City, but then I realized we weren’t going to have the space we wanted or be able to afford it with small kids," Jamal shares. "We looked in South Orange, Maplewood, Glen Ridge, and all over the area—and when we found our home in Montclair, we knew it was right."

For Jamal, the transition proved that leaving a dense city apartment doesn't mean feeling isolated. Between having space for kids to play, backyards for hosting friends, and being able to go out for cocktails downtown and get back home in 10 minutes, Montclair offered the perfect balance.

Schools, Diversity, and True Community

When asked what non-negotiable feature he looked for during their home search, Jamal emphasized education and genuine representation:

• A Diverse Environment: "We have Black kids. We wanted them to be in class with other Black kids and kids from all backgrounds without feeling isolated. Montclair is diverse in every way you could imagine."
• Campus & Cultural Resources: From the Yogi Berra Museum to Saturday morning bike-riding camps at Montclair State University, the township is infused with enrichment opportunities.
• Year-Round Celebrations: Montclair’s active cultural calendar—spanning the Montclair Film Festival, Pride Fest, African American History Month events, and Asian American celebrations—ensures that everyone finds their place.

As host of the Trailblaze podcast and author of the Kill the Spider Substack, Jamal shared tactical advice for creators, entrepreneurs, and professionals looking to cut through the noise in modern media:
